What is a specialist dentist for oral surgery?

Only dentists who have successfully completed at least four years of further training in oral surgery after completing their dental studies, including licensure, may call themselves specialist dentists for oral surgery. This can only be completed full-time and as a main occupation at approved training centers (including at least 1 year in a hospital for oral and maxillofacial surgery).

During the training, the focus is primarily on implantology, but also on the removal of displaced wisdom teeth, surgical tooth extractions, root tip resections, tumor operations, treatment of facial, head and neck injuries, etc. The oral surgery training content is strictly regulated and includes specific subject areas and treatment procedures.

After 4 years of further training, there is an examination phase at the dental association; after successful participation, one may officially bear the title “Specialist Dentist for Oral Surgery.”

Difference between a specialist dentist for oral surgery and a “normal” dentist

Normal dentists are generalists who can also be active in oral surgery. However, they are not specialized in complex surgical procedures.

Specialist dentists for oral surgery, on the other hand, have comprehensive training specifically focused on surgical procedures and are proficient in complex procedures such as implantology, wisdom tooth removal, and maxillofacial surgery.

They therefore offer particularly high expertise for demanding treatments and complex surgical procedures that are associated with special risks and requirements.
